HEEL PAIN, HEEL SPUR & PLANTAR FASCIITIS (Pain in the arch and inside edge of the heel, sometimes extending over the whole heel) HEEL PAIN & HEEL BURSITIS  (Pain in the centre of the heel) Plantar fasciitis is a condition that affects the heel and arch of the foot. Excessive, constant abnormal pulling and stretching of the fibrous bands that support the arch, causes the heel bone to become inflamed and painful. This constant irritation can sometimes lead to a heel spur (bony growth) forming on the bottom of the heel bone, resulting in heel pain. The patient usually complains of pain with the first step in the morning, some relief following activity, but the pain returning after extended amounts of time standing or walking. Unfortunately this condition is very common and like many other foot problems is the result of having an excessively pronated foot (the feet become misaligned and combined with poor posture roll inwards to gain ground contact, the arches become flattened). Certainly the first line of defense for this painful condition is good supporting shoes which have a wide toe box and a low heel. Useful treatments for Plantar fasciitis are anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin and Ibuprofen gel/tablets. Cold ice-pack compresses can be useful in reducing any swelling with stretching exercises and massage both being beneficial.
