Thick Toenails Range
Thickening of the nail may be caused by a fungal infection or occur following severe
trauma from an injury or the gradual irritation of a tight shoe. The nail bed and
matrix (root) can become irreversibly damaged, causing the nail to grow abnormally
thick and discoloured dark yellowish-brown. Very often the first toe nail is affected
but the disorder may appear in the others. The excessive thickening makes cutting
the nail extremely difficult consequently is often neglected, with the result of
pain and discomfort from the shoe pressing against the nail.
Irrespective of the cause,
the nail should be cut with nail clippers and filed down to as normal a thickness
as possible so that the pressure on the toe is relieved. If the patient is young
and the condition is confined to one toe and there are no contra-indications, total
surgical removal of the nail and matrix (root) may be considered the most satisfactory
long-term treatment.

or a neuropathy (where the sensation to the foot is diminished) immediate care of
a HPC Registered Podiatrist is recommended. They will be able to advise you and treat
the nails painlessly.
